We started the class by watching a short video about Jazz. I didn't pay much attention on the video but I enjoyed the melody played. Then, Mr. Herry gave us chance to finish the homework given yesterday, although some of us have done it beforehand. Then, we checked the answers together. I had one wrong answer only. Then, Mr. Herry showed us another Jazz video.
Each instrument class has its representative to perform "When the Saints' Go Marchin' In'. I didn't become the representative for my instrument class because I wasn't ready. Next time if I'm ready with the song I will offer myself to become the representative. Then, all instrument teachers gathered to perform Autumn Leaves in front of the class. It was truly amazing and I really enjoyed the performance. The improvisation was great!
I found that the beginning of Jazz can't be guessed if people just look at its characteristic. I do think that Jazz music has calm melody, but who can guess that Jazz was born between the pain of lost love and injustice during the slavery in America?
I like how my teacher delivered the Jazz topic. He plays Jazz melodies in every sessions so that the students will have better understanding in Jazz. Besides, the handouts given are helpful and shorten the time (rather than doing research by our own which would spend more time). I also think that the class is easy to catch-up since the instrument class starts with playing a simple dixieland song. The class would be more fun if I could play my favorite Jazz musicians such as Shakatak and Smoma.
